Competitors take bad breaks and use them to drive themselves just that much harder. As the wonderful living golf legend Nancy Lopez has said, “A competitor will find a way to win. I’d like to think we’re in the business of. It is for every golfer who ever dreamed of stringing two good shots together, making a putt to beat their mate or walking in the footsteps of the game’s champions on one of the world’s great courses. We have to create what we want to see happen in our lives and our businesses. Golf Australia has the highest readership of any measured golf magazine in this country. No doubt, these are uncertain times for everyone, but what I know for sure is that when I keep showing up day after day and put my best foot forward, no matter how scared I am by what is happening around me, positive things happen. We have grown our base exponentially and will be rolling out national programming for our new members. We now have women from all over the country attend our virtual events. We’re hosting “How to Play In A Business Golf Outing” zoom sessions and soon we’ll be conducting virtual golf lessons. Our guests have included an LPGA Tour Player, powerful women in the business world, and our next guest is the only Latina owner of a golf course in the United States. We started with 19th Hole Zoom Happy Hours and are now hosting monthly Zoom Power Lunch gatherings where we feature amazing women who are closely or loosely tied to the golf world. I could not have asked for a better response. We did not, however, let COVID-19 define the LGA, and we put into practice one of our long-range plans, which was to conduct virtual lessons and activities. While we’re back in the swing of things, the local health orders have drastically limited our programming. But like most of the world, our activities came to a complete halt in March of this year. The LGA has been on an upswing for the past few years and the start of 2020 brought in the best two months we ever had. Today, they are confidently engaging in social golf outings and have learned to leverage golf as a business tool. So far, over 2,000 women-95% of whom have never even held a golf club before-have attended our golf clinics, lessons, and outings in Los Angeles, CA. Through the LGA, I’m fulfilling my mission to introduce as many women as possible to golf. Golf transformed my world and I have seen, first-hand, how it has the power to alter women’s lives both personally and professionally. To the editor: Younger adults, who regard golfing as expensive and slow, are disinclined to take up the sport. It’s a stupid idea, but so is developing publicly owned golf courses. Developing some of that acreage would certainly mitigate much of our housing shortage. The 200 California golf courses that AB 1910 affects wouldn’t take up a fourth of the 155,000 acres we’ve set aside in the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. A conversation about developing parkland golf courses won’t stop there. To the editor: Be careful what “conversation” you suggest opening. So, placing a picture of a golfer playing golf at one of these courses, implying that there is a possibility of housing at these locations, is disingenuous. Set aside the fact that the Army Corps has a 50-year contract with the city of Los Angeles to provide leisure recreation services in the Sepulveda and Hansen Dam basins, each basin has a variety of flood zone levels that would prohibit permanent residential housing anyway. Specific to these four municipal golf courses, they are all located on land owned by the federal government, managed by the Army Corps of Engineers, inside dam basins. Neither is the Woodley Lakes, Encino or Hansen Dam municipal golf courses, all of which are managed by the city of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. This course is not a candidate to convert into housing. To the editor: With your editorial saying that it’s time to consider turning publicly owned golf courses into housing, you printed a photo showing Balboa Golf Course in Van Nuys.
